The safety of our youth as they travel around the community is an important issue. The Selkirk Elementary School Active Transportation Plan will ensure that the best options to actively travel to and from school are in place. Recommendations will include infrastructure improvements and suggestions for programs and education. Making Riverdale more comfortable for kids to confidently walk and wheel starts with identifying and addressing safety and social barriers to better support active travel.

What is the City of Whitehorse doing now?

We're creating an Active Travel Plan for Selkirk Elementary School during November and December 2022. The project aims to:

  • Address safety concerns around active routes to Selkirk Elementary School;
  • Encourage more children and their families to walk, cycle, and roll to school;
  • Improve walking and cycling infrastructure to and from the school; and
  • Increase education and awareness around active transportation.

The Active Travel Plan will include a list of infrastructure recommendations, and initiatives and programming to help improve school travel.

Now is the time to get involved!

We value your input and would like to hear from you! We want to understand what is important to you, and what changes you would like to see. This will help us develop a plan that meets the needs of your family.

  1. Please take the time to fill out the five-minute survey below by Monday, November 28 to help inform the project team about your experiences with active transportation in Riverdale.
  2. We also invite you to attend two sessions taking place at Selkirk Elementary School.

Drop-In Session 1 - Issues and Opportunities: Tuesday, November 29, 2022, 6-8 pm

We would like to hear about:

  • Your experience of traveling to school;
  • The challenges and opportunities for walking, cycling, and rolling to school; and
  • Your ideas for encouraging walking, cycling, and rolling to school.

Your input will be used to help shape the developing Active Travel Plan.

Drop-In Session 2 - Concept Ideas and Draft Recommendations: Thursday, December 1, 2022, 6-8 pm

  • Share developing ideas for the Active Travel Plan; and
  • Seek further feedback on recommendations for active school travel.

Your input will be used to further refine the developing Active Travel Plan.

We look forward to seeing you!

Our commitment to you:

We will strive to have your concerns and suggestions inform the outcome of the Selkirk Elementary School Active Transportation Plan by:

  • Developing actionable, context appropriate interventions, and recommendations for Selkirk School.
  • Recommending solutions to the streetscape, regional trails, and built environment to improve the walk/wheel-ability and safety within school boundaries.
  • Change the perceptions of active travel, and support programs to improve safety and reduce conflict between transportation modes; and
  • Sharing our findings with the Selkirk Elementary School community, administration, parents, and students.

The City’s successful active transportation plan will address local realities and build a sense of shared ownership and excitement within the community.
