We’re using ‘rapid implementation techniques’, which is a fast and cost-effective way of building walking and cycling infrastructure. This method allows us to meet urgent needs and demands from the community, and easily make changes to the design based on feedback from the community and our own observations.
Background
In 2018, the City developed its first Bicycle Network Plan, which identified the need for a connection between the Two Mile Hill and Riverfront multi-use pathways. In 2019, the City undertook the AAA Cycling Corridors Conceptual Design process to determine the preferred alignment and conceptual design approach for this connection. AAA refers to a bicycle facility that is built to certain standards and designed to encourage people of all ages and abilities to ride bicycles as a mode of transportation, promote healthy and active lifestyles, and reduce dependence on cars. Through this work, it was determined that a cycling connection along Chilkoot Way was the preferred option. In 2022, the City’s Transit Modernization Improvements Plan recommended the potential for two-way transit along Chilkoot Way.
Design work is currently underway for the Chilkoot Greenway with construction expected in the summer 2023. The proposed improvements will support transportation accessibility, connectivity, equity, mobility, safety, and sustainability. Improvements include:
Corridor improvements
Two-way protected bicycle lane on the North side of Chilkoot Way complete with signage and pavement markings. The protected bicycle lane will be horizontally separated from vehicular traffic and includes vertical barriers to improve safety and comfort.
Speed limit reduced to 30 km/hr to reduce the likelihood of severe injuries and collisions.
Reduced lane widths to slow vehicular speeds.
Intersections
Bicycle-friendly pushbuttons at Chilkoot Way.
Signal timing improvements to safety and traffic flow at Two Mile Hill & Chilkoot Way and Quartz Road & Chilkoot Way intersections.
Modified signal timing to include leading pedestrian and leading bike intervals to improve safety.
Pedestrian/cyclist crossings
Marked crosswalk between Save-on-Foods and Starbucks.
Reduced pedestrian/cycling crossing distances.
Transit
Transit stops on both sides of Chilkoot Way at Save-on-Foods and Starbucks.
